Chocolate Cake Mix Painting

A few months ago, I happened upon a most spectacular deal on cake mixes at my local Safeway.  One of my money-saving principles, is that I "stock-up" on items that we regularly use when they are at their cheapest prices.  Cake mix is always in need, so I bought 20 or so of them :)  I got all 20 of them for about the regular price of 5 of them (75% off regular retail is a typically a good "stock-up" price, FYI).

Cake mix is great for lots of things!  Cakes and cupcakes are their usual use, but have you ever thought about painting with it?  Mmmm.

I mixed chocolate cake mix with a little bit of water to make a good paint-like consistency.  I did NOT tell my children what they were painting with...I wanted them to figure it out on their own as they saw and smelled it.  I told them that we were going to finger paint with brown paint.  Do you know how long it took them to figure out that it was edible chocolate paint?  10 seconds.  They were so excited!  Ellie (4) continued to paint, mixing in a lick here or there.  Zoe (2) mostly just ate the chocolate.  They loved it!
You could use any kind of cake mix for finger painting.  Just don't add the eggs!  Use only water so they can lick to their hearts desire!  Don't forget to hang your child's picture up on the fridge or a cabinet to display!

Other paint ideas:
  • flour and water
  • powdered sugar and water (add food coloring and wear an apron)-yum!
  • pudding
  • toothpaste (use a toothbrush as your paintbrush!)
  • Frosting
The possibilities are endless!  Have some fun painting with unusual "paints" with your kids today!

  1. I think it's awesome that you didn't tell them that it was cake mix. Your girls are so super cute Jess. This looks like a lot of fun. Finger-painting is always fun, but even more so when you can lick your fingers when you are done with your masterpiece!
