Today's Fun Felt Friday is a tutorial on how to make a felt board. My girls have a pink one attached to their wall in their bedroom. I *used* to have one in my classroom until someone stole it last week to re-purpose. I caught the culprit. :) I then went on the hunt for an unused board around the school...and I found one! And so, I again have a felt board in my classroom! Here are the steps to make your very own felt board:
You will need a cork board or any other sort of sturdy board that you can find. It doesn't have to look great, as you will be covering it with felt anyway. You could even use a sturdy piece of cardboard. It can be any size-big or small. You will also need enough felt to cover the entire board, plus about 2-3" of extra to wrap around the entire board (so 6 extra inches in height and length). I found enough yellow felt at the school to use, and though it's not my preferred color, it worked. You will also need a hot glue gun.
Lay your felt out on the ground and center your board on it, face down. You should be looking at the back side of the board right now. Like this:
Next, take your hot glue gun and begin applying the glue to the back of your board. Quickly press the felt onto the glue. Make sure that your felt is even before you begin gluing!
Don't worry if the back does not look "pretty". It is just the back. You won't see it anyway. Turn your board over and check it out! You should have a new felt board that is ready to be played with! The best part is that it takes about 5 minutes to make and is very cheap!
If you want your board to be stationary, you can nail it to a wall using long nails or screws. We used some thick screws to attach our pink board to the girls' wall in their bedroom. I like to be able to put the one in my classroom away, or move it to different areas, so I did not attach it to a wall.
For the last school I was at I just used that sturdy white board stuff. It worked really well. Gotta love a good glue gun, right Jess?
